Are almonds nuts?

Factually speaking, almonds are not nuts. They are seeds from uneaten stone fruit. Almonds are in the same family as peaches, plums, apricots, and cherries.

However, the almond is a ‘nut’ when it comes to nut allergies.

The nut family consists of:

  • Hazelnut, cashew nut, Brazil nut, almond, and walnut.
  • Peanuts are a legume. The peanut is the ‘nut’ most people with allergies react to.

Nuts, seeds, and kernels that rarely cause reactions:

  • Birches, pumpkin seeds, chestnuts, coconuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, sesame seeds, and sunflower seeds.

The coconut is not a nut but instead belongs to the palm family palmaceae, which in addition to coconut consists of date, sago, and palm oil. It is very rare for people with nut allergies to react to coconut.

How many almonds can you have a day?

Almonds contain both dietary fiber, healthy fatty acids, and proteins, all of which help keep you full for longer.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recommends approx. 30 grams a day. Some sources say that 5-10 almonds a day, approx. a small handful is good for the skin as they contain vitamin E. However, it is always best to eat different nuts, grains, and seeds during a day so that the diet does not become one-sided

Almonds weigh about 1g. apiece.
